The first official music release under the artist name Mykki Blanco dropped in the form of an EP entitled Mykki Blanco & The Mutant Angels in 2012. It's been just over a decade since the moniker ‘Mykki Blanco’ was created - first as a video art project portraying a teenage female character (inspired by Lil Kim’s ‘Kimmy Blanco’ alter ego) posting vlogs and raps on social media, but it inevitably evolved into a vehicle of self-discovery in the artist’s journey of forming their personal self-identity. Soon after, TIP made the band his first signing to label imprint Love You Up, in partnership with his management team at September (Adele, Rick Rubin, King Krule, PA Salieu) and with us at Transgressive also joining the fold as The Joy’s publishing partners. One of those, inspired by their energy and authenticity, was producer Two Inch Punch who flew his equipment over to Durban, setting up in a hotel room and recording the band for their first session. Through the band’s Instagram account, their music began to spread globally, soon catching the attention of high profile names within the worldwide artist community who instantly fell in love with the quintet’s repertoire of uplifting songs, unique arrangements and traditional dance moves. The teachers and other students loved their music and encouraged them to continue to sing as a group. Originally from a small town just outside of Durban in South Africa, The Joy met at high school after entering a singing competition together and is made up of band members Ntokozo Magcaba, Melokuhle Mkhungo, Sanele Ngcobo, Phelelani Sithole and Sandile Sphelele Hlophe. Against a brutal global backdrop of impending apocalypse and despair, Coxon and Dougall strove to free themselves through the defiant, blind optimism of making music.īy working together the pair have formed a new, singular sonic identity. The WAEVE is the coming together of two musicians on the verge, themes of oblivion and surrender are juxtaposed with suggestions of hopefulness and light. Music was made with a cinematic breadth whilst maintaining an honest intimacy, to make the internal external. The sound developed slowly but surely, voices and words started to find their natural space, guitars and saxophones made clarion calls, strings lifted into other stratospheres. Initially drawing on a shared love of English folk music, storytelling and the associated landscapes of this beleaguered island, the collaborators grew in confidence to start voyaging into uncharted waters. Before long, these gave rise to an unexpected sonic universe. Vocalist in Blur, plus the originator of acclaimed soundtracks including ‘The End of the F**king World’ - and Rose Elinor Dougall - revered solo artist, Mark Ronson collaborator and founder of The Pipettes - embarked on some tentative explorations into songwriting. ![]() Graham Coxon - iconic songwriter, guitarist and ![]() ![]() Here comes The WAEVE: as 2020 was limping its way to the finish line, two acquaintances met and exchanged missives over that strange Christmas.
